![]() The "Intuitive"vs the "Sensor" in the Myers Briggs" I will attempt to elaborate on the next function in the Myers Briggs: The "intuitive" or the "N" vs the "sensor" or the "S." This function helps us understand HOW we like to take in information and WHAT KIND of information we trust. In my opinion, this function is the most telling in what a person is. When you hear the definition of this function, there will for sure be alarm bells ringing in your head. Either for you or for people that you know. So here goes… Sensors prefer to focus on PRESENT REALITIES, VERIFIABLE FACTS, and EXPERIENCE. A common line I'll hear from sensors is "I only want to learn this if I SEE a point in knowing. Knowledge just for knowing-sake is pointless and a waste of time." They are the ones that will notice DETAILS quicker. Like what color your shoes are. Or what a person’s name is. If you would give them a piece of knowledge, they would need proof before believing the facts. Their imagination is rather limited, as they prefer to live in the present. People who prefer "intuition" are exactly the opposite. They prefer to focus on FUTURE POSSIBILITIES, the BIG PICTURE, and INSIGHTS. If sensors like to live in reality then intuitives like to live in their IMAGINATIONS. They will faster make "something from nothing." They like to link different seemingly incongruous ideas together. They many times miss the details and jump straight to the BIG PICTURE. So I hear about many "n" men say to their wives when they are dating "what do you see yourself doing in 10 years from now?" Or I hear other “n" people saying in regard to potential business employees. "I don't care about his actual work-I care more about his potential." In other words, a sensor prefers to take in and present information in a SEQENTIAL, STEP BY STEP, and way. And an intuitive prefers to take in and present information in a SNAPSHOT or BIG PICTURE kind of way. The example I like to give is of a speech that an intuitive and a sensor attended. Sensor will start at the beginning, and point by point he will go through the speech explaining the speech in sequential detail. If you'd ask the intuitive he'd say something like "well he basically spoke about the ills of lashon horah." (Snapshot view.) If you'd ask him to elaborate he’d say "well in the middle he spoke about..... And I love the last thing he said..... And toward the beginning... "Well, if the intuitive was talking to a sensor, the sensor may just come out with a headache trying to put that speech in order! People who prefer sensing build carefully and thoroughly towards conclusions. While intuitives prefer to move quickly to conclusion and follow hunches. The sensor will not trust his hunches as much as an intuitive will. An example that comes to mind here is when a person is looking for a shidduch for his child. The intuitive will trust his vibes whereas a sensor will want to hear more details to make some sense out of it. Sensors only understand ideas and theories through practical applications. (Which is why the intuitive tends to prefer reading and learning over sensors.) I remember working with a teacher who had a very strong sensing function. Anything that we taught the children, she wanted to make a tangible project with it. She felt that this way, it will really penetrate the student’s minds. (She didn't realize that this was only true for the sensors.) The sensors tend to be more SPECIFIC and LITERAL. The intuitives tend to use more METAPHORS and ANALOGIES. Words that come to mind for sensing is: FACTS, REALISTIC, SPECIFIC, PRESENT, PRACTICAL, WHAT IS, & KEEP. Words that come to mind for intuition is: IDEAS, IMAGINATIVE, GENERAL, FUTURE, CHANGE, THEORETICAL, & WHAT COULD BE. Now, let's keep in mind, that we ALL use sensing and intuition when making observations about the world. But we DO NOT use them with equal trust! Most of us have a preference for one or the other. Also, this goes without saying, that one is NOT better than the other. (Although in some cultures, one is more RESPECTED than the other.) There is not "right" or "wrong" here. In Hashem's eyes, we are all equal. These are just some of the tools that were given to you to assist you in fulfilling your Tafkid in this world I've heard many people ask me "where is my Bechirah when I am learning this? It sounds like you are telling me that I have no bechirah because this is my innate personality. I answer them by saying that I am not locking them into their personality. They have already locked themselves in! By NOT knowing you're point of Bechirah, you have NO CHOICES. Because you will automatically do what is easy for you. Now, after knowing this, you will have more of the ability to choose. You can choose to be a sensor or an intuitive at any given moment. As I close, I’d just like to add one point that you may find interesting. Most people in the world are sensors. The percentage of people with a preference for sensing is a whopping 75% and the intuitives are only 25%. So, if you’re a person that may often feel a bit lonely….. Well you’re probably an intuitive!
